Setting the stage for the rollout of 5G service, TRAI has chalked out a mega auction plan for allocated radio waves in multiple bands at a base price of over Rs 7.5 lakh crore over 30 years.

There was no clarity about 5G in India for the last few years. From the recent statements of the government, it was being speculated that the auction of 5G spectrum would be held this year itself, but the deadline was not confirmed. However, now the statement of Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has made it clear that the auction of 5G spectrum in India can happen in early June. For this, telecom regulator TRAI has prepared a mega auction plan worth more than Rs 7.5 lakh crore.

Ashwini Vaishnav, in a statement on Thursday, said that the DoT is working as per the stipulated time frame and also in the process of resolving the concerns of the industry around fixing the spectrum price. At the same time, when asked about the schedule of the spectrum auction, Vaishnav said that it is expected to be held in early June.

In his statement, Vaishnav said, “We are going ahead with our deadline for conducting the auction.” The minister further said that the Digital Communications Commission will consider the recommendations of TRAI and contact them for clarifications.

The government will also address the concerns of the industry regarding the price of the spectrum

Experts have recommended a mega auction plan of over Rs 7.5 lakh crore for a spectrum above 1 lakh MHz if allotted by the government for a period of 30 years.

Whereas, in the case of 20 years, the total value of the proposed spectrum auction would be around Rs 5.07 lakh crore. While TRAI has reduced the spectrum price by about 39 percent as compared to the previous price, telecom operators have said that the rates suggested are higher than the global benchmark.
